Since 2015, I’ve been working with small businesses to help elevate their marketing efforts through Google Ads.
My first client was still using Yellow Pages when I started working with them. Yikes!
Over the years, when working with small businesses, they understand that there is value if you use Google Ads as a marketing platform.
The mistake is that they are using it wrong.
The common mistakes I see among Google Ads account is the lack of proper set up.
Mistake #1: Having “smart mode” activated — instead of expert mode.
This is a common mistake that most businesses don’t even realize they’re making. The way that Google creates a new account automatically enrolls businesses in this “smart mode.”
The process with “smart ads” is simplified for businesses to get ads up and running and have instant gratification.
However, the problem with this setup, is that it limits targeting and features for the account.
Of times during my first consultation with prospective clients, I ask them if they have “Smart Campaigns” set up or not. Nine times out of ten the answer is “I don’t know.”
This advertising mode is the first major change I make when starting with new clients, that way all of the expert features are available so that the ads can be customized for the best results. Learn the difference between the two.
I’m a daily Notion user, but these things still annoy me.
When I revived my Twitter (now X) account in early 2022, I was connected with many “Notion creators” across the platform.
The note-taking-turned-work app was making huge splashes with creative ideas, templates, and systems that creators could benefit from.
I was already using Notion at the time for a number of things on the freelance side of my work. So, I didn’t need to “work with a team” and optimize my output, so I just carried on using the platform as I always had.
I use Notion for tracking my clients’ work, brainstorming projects, logging my family budget, tracking my health results, and planning travels.
I even dabbled at one time to build a “hashtag organizer” on there too (it’s still available if you’re interested).
Overall, Notion is a one-woman platform for me, but I have found glaring features of the app that are so annoying when using it.
You can’t use “command+k” for links
I am constantly copying, pasting, formatting, and using numerous keyboard shortcuts.
