Jamie, how did your passion for minimalist side hustles develop? Can you tell us a bit about your journey?
I’ve always been passionate about entrepreneurship and have had dozens of different side hustles over the past 25 years, but in 2020 something changed. I realized that I didn’t want to replace my 9-5 with dozens or hundreds of bosses (a.k.a. clients).
That’s when I decided to look for side hustles that didn’t involve customers directly, or “low-stress” transactions with them. That’s how I came to discover what I call minimalist side hustles.
Can you share a success story about someone who has successfully monetized their passion following your advice? What were some key strategies they used?
There are many people that have earned following my guides, consulting, and newsletter through minimalist side hustles. Mostly via Amazon KDP, Newsletters, and Medium.
The key strategy that I teach is that you have to be passionate about what you’re trying to do, as it’s the only way you will be consistent enough to be successful. It’s a long-term game, not a get rich quick scheme, so if you don’t pick you passion it will be dreadful and you’ll likely quit.
What does a 'minimalist side hustle' mean to you, and why do you think it is effective for monetization?
Minimalist side hustles are ones that don’t require much at all. No special skills, no shipping, no inventory, and often times no customers. It’s effective because you can start most of them for free, or very little money. You’re essentially creating income out of nothing.

In the process of helping others monetize their passions, how do you approach the marketing aspect? Can you share some innovative marketing strategies you've used or recommended?
Relationships are everything. Build relationships with people in your niche, it will help you in so many ways including in marketing (often free). People that like you and what you do will share your stuff, and also recommend you when an opportunity arises.
Cross-promotions work really well to help relationships, and help you grow too.
Can you share your top three tips for someone looking to monetize their passion through a side hustle?
The first tip and most important is to consistently dedicate time to it. If you do 4 hours today, and 5 hours in a month, it’s not as good as doing 30 minutes a week for 2 months. Consistency is key.
The second tip is to focus on the process. Results take time, so don’t worry about them for at least the first year, just focus on the process. Do what needs to be done, and good stuff will come.
The third tip is don’t let negative people change what you’re doing. Learn to identify the difference between noise and constructive criticism. You can grow and get better through criticism if it’s good, but you need to choose what’s good and when to make changes. Ignore everything else. Trust yourself.
As a "professional newsletter subscriber" as your Twitter X bio states, you must come across a wealth of information. How do you discern the truly valuable content from the noise? Any tips for our readers (and me)?
I’m subscribed to over 200 newsletters, and the ones I truly read completely are the ones that I love, trust, and/or know the author. The others it depends on the topic.
The key is to make sure unsubscribe from the ones that don’t bring you value (knowledge and/or entertainment). Keep your inbox filled with the ones you enjoy and help you get closer to you goals. Reply to the newsletters too, build a relationship with people writing your favorite ones.
From your experience subscribing to numerous newsletters, what elements make a newsletter truly stand out for you? Any insights for marketers aiming to elevate their newsletters?
The most important thing (besides content) is the formatting.
Nobody wants to read a brick wall of text, and most don’t want to read a long essay in an email. Make sure you give your text room, and split it up into sections. If you need to share long-form content, write it in your blog or Medium, and then summarize and link to it in the actual newsletter.
Thanks so much for featuring me Virginia :))
